Chaum’s idea was to break the linkage between the issuance and usage of a credential. This means that when Alice shows her credential to the website, all the site learns is that Alice has been given a valid credential. The site should not learn which issuance flow produced her the credential, which means it should not learn her exact ID; and this should hold even if the website colludes with (or literally is) the issuer of the credentials.
